“Iti” in Te reo Maori means “small” and “Tama” means boy. This dolphin got his name because it was still with his mother when first sighted, making him no more than just 2 years old when first seen. We know Tama Iti is a male. He was first seen in 1991, and has been exclusively sighted in Akaroa Harbour so it is fair to say that it is his preferred spot!
